There are a lot of products that earn “gear of the year” awards. Very few of those products are still manufactured nearly four decades later. But Gramicci’s G-Shorts are. The climbing short that launched the outdoor apparel brand in 1982 also received the Outside Magazine Award for the “Most Influential Gear of All Time” in 2012. (Yes, all time!) With features like a diamond-shaped crotch gusset and an adjustable waistband with a locking buckle, the G-Shorts (and G-Pants) started the industry’s freedom-of-movement trend and made a name for Gramicci.
But where did the company’s name come from? Back in the ‘70s, Mike Graham was hanging out in Yosemite with a group of climbers who decided to participate in an all-Italian ascent of Half Dome. Since the guys weren’t actually Italian, they used aliases. Graham became Gramicci and the name stuck.
Though Gramicci has since changed ownership, the company continues to pioneer lifestyle clothing and athletic apparel through the use of proprietary fabrics and innovative features. More than 60% of Gramicci’s products are made from either recycled or organic materials using low-impact environmental methodologies. And, true to its climbing roots, everything is built with comfort and mobility in mind. Underarm hinges. High-low hems. Temperature regulation.
